Worth the wait, new Impreza set to bow at dealerships next month

November's Midwest Automotive Media Association luncheon featured Subaru's new darling, the 2012 Impreza. Delayed more than three months by production slowdowns caused by the earthquake/tsunami in Japan, the Impreza is set to debut at Chicagoland Subaru dealerships this December.
On hand to introduce the new Impreza were Tod Hill, Impreza line manager, and Dominick Infante, product public relations manager. Though comparable in size to the outgoing model, the 2012 Subaru Impreza offers more passenger and cargo space.
Subaru had two goals for the new Impreza: make it more fuel efficient and make it more attractive.
Powered by an all-new 148-hp 2.0-liter flat four-cylinder engine, the 2012 Impreza comes with either a five-speed manual transmission or CVT (continuously variable transmission) automatic. According to Hill, the '12 Impreza will offer the highest fuel economy of any all-wheel drive car in America, with projected EPA ratings of 27 mpg city and 36 mpg highway.
The interior and exterior design are completely new and carry forward hallmark cues from big-brother Legacy. Also new is the body structure, which Subaru claims is stiffer and nearly 100 pounds lighter.
Two bodystyles will be offered, four-door sedan and five-door wagon. Both will be available in base, Premium and Limited trim. The wagon will also be available in Sport trim that effectively replaces the Outback Sport for the 2012 model year.
Look for the 2012 Subaru Impreza at dealerships in December or at the Chicago Auto Show this February.
