WHO: To be a blood donor, individuals must be at least 17 years old, or 16 with written parental permission; weigh at least 110 pounds; be symptom free of cold, flu and allergies; and be in general good health. Donors who have traveled outside the United States within the past 12 months should contact Heartland at 1-800-7TO-GIVE to determine eligibility.

THANK YOU: As a thank you, all donors will receive a limited edition, Chicago Auto Show Blood Donor t-shirt.

The Donation Process: It is a quick and easy procedure to donate blood or one of the other blood products we collect. For most donors, the process takes only about an hour from start to finish.

Step 1: Donor Registration

During the registration process, we collect basic contact information and give you important reading material on the blood donation process. Donors must present a valid photo I.D. and proof of age during registration.

Step 2: Screening & Mini-Physical

We conduct a confidential interview with you to learn more about your medical history so that we can determine your eligibility to donate blood. Our medical professionals will conduct a brief physical exam – checking your temperature, pulse, blood pressure and iron level – so that we can be sure it is safe for you to make your donation.

Step 3: Blood Donation

After you are settled in, a Heartland Blood Centers representative will cleanse your arm with antiseptic and begin the blood draw using a new, sterile kit for each donor. It takes about five to eight minutes to donate whole blood, longer for automated donations such as platelets or double red cells.

Step 4: Relax and Rehydrate

Following your donation, we invite you to relax with some juice and cookies in our refreshment area. These refreshments help your body to replenish fluids lost during the donation process. Your donation will then be taken back to our laboratory for testing and processing.
