What You Need to Know about the Takata Recall

Posted by: Jennifer Morand

To help clear up any misinformation that’s been circulating the Internet, we’ve compiled facts below on what you need to know about the recent Takata airbag recall.

What is Takata?
Takata Corp. is a Japanese auto parts supplier that has recently received negative press due to supplying a component to auto manufacturers that can cause airbags to deploy in a way that is unsafe. While Takata’s airbag component is currently under scrutiny, the company also manufactures seat belts, steering wheels and other automotive parts. It supplies many automakers across the globe.

Why are Takata airbags being recalled?
The driver and/or passenger-side air bags can inflate with too much force, blowing apart a metal canister and sending shards flying at drivers and passengers. It's estimated that up to 34 million vehicles are affected. To date, there have been at least 100 injuries and six deaths.

What's causing the defect?
The recall focuses on a specific component of the air bag system. This component causes the air bag to inflate. Takata, automakers and the government are still trying to pinpoint the exact cause of the problem, but are prioritizing repairs in humid climates, because Takata believes longtime exposure to high humidity can be a factor. However, the cause is unknown at this point.

Does my vehicle have Takata airbags?
Honda has the most vehicles equipped with Takata air bags. Dozens of models made by BMW, Chrysler, Daimler Trucks, Ford, General Motors, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Subaru and Toyota dating to the 2001 model year are also affected.

How do I know if my vehicle is recalled due to this issue?
Visit SafeCar.gov and follow the instructions. NOTE: According to the website, it generally takes anywhere from a few days to several weeks for automakers to gather individual VINs associated with a recall. It is important that you check back periodically as a recall on your vehicle may not show up immediately.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Association (NHTSA) is waiting for automakers to supply a complete list of affected vehicles. The NHTSA will update this link with new information as soon as it becomes available.

You can also contact your local new-car dealer. They can use your vehicle VIN number to tell you if your vehicle is currently under recall for this or other issues.

Helpful Hint: You can find your vehicle’s VIN number by looking through the windshield from the outside of the vehicle on the driver’s side. Alternatively, most insurance cards will list the vehicle’s VIN number.

Why is this a big issue?
This recall is receiving a great deal of press because it’s the largest single-part recall in history. However, just because it’s the largest recall, does not mean there’s more cause to panic. We will keep our fans updated as more details surface.

Where can I get more information on the recall?
The government has posted more details here on the issue.
