Here Comes the Press

Posted by: Taylor Stephens

Media Preview Day at the Chicago Auto Show was the day I felt the most excitement and trepidation over.  I was looking forward to seeing what the day was all about but I had no idea what expect so that made me a little nervous. However, one thing I learned right off the bat was that nothing at this internship is set in stone. There are so many things that are subject to change that "go with the flow" would have to be my middle name.

The other interns and I started Media Preview Day at 5 a.m. We had to be at the Media Center-our home base- to help get the press their credentials for the press conferences. We would all be "manning our station at the Media Center in shifts. In between working the desk, in teams of two, we would be covering various press conferences on the show floor. We would be mingling amongst experienced journalists all vying for the same shot or sound-bite.

The first press conference that I got to cover was for Chevrolet. We were told that they would be unveiling their brand-new 2016 Equinox SUV and re-introducing their 2016 Silverado Truck. My partner and I rushed over to the Chevrolet display to try and get the best spot possible as we are short in stature. Luckily, we were pretty early, so we were able to get a seat in the second row with prime viewing of the cars and speaker. As we sat down, we noticed that many of the reporters were staring at us with what looked like confused faces. They were most likely wondering what these short, small college girls were doing at Media Preview Day. But we ignored them. We had our media credentials to be there and we had our mission to get quotes and capture images.

It was the best first press conference ever! The atmosphere, the lights, the people, and the cars- it was all so fun and exciting! I felt like a real public relations professional working my "big-girl" job. Overall, this internship has been a wonderful time and I'm so glad I got to experience it at something as amazing as the Chicago Auto Show!
