Army Strong

Posted by: Melody Legge

In 1975, Paul Brian introduced the Army to the Chicago Auto Show by having a tank on the exhibit floor. Now the Army has a full exhibit expanding so and so square feet. The Army has quite the interactive exhibit featuring a rock-climbing wall, a parachute photo opportunity and a variety of Army vehicles that auto show enthusiasts can experience firsthand by having the opportunity to climb inside.

Brigade Commander Iacocca paid a visit to the Chicago Auto Show and the Army exhibit yesterday. Iacocca oversees 3,000 soldiers in 15 states. He has been in the Army since 1988 and has chosen to make a career of it. Not only has the Army provided him with leadership skills and a created a great career for him, it is also where he met his wife. During his military experience, he has recently served in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Army has chosen to display what it has to offer at the Chicago Auto. The National Guard, Army Reserves, ROTC, and Active Duty are all being represented at the show this year. This allows civilians to see and have a better understanding of what each area has to offer and what might be the best fit for someone who is thinking about enlisting. It has incorporated many aspects of the Army so people can see the many benefits that it has to offer. Iacocca stated that there are many benefits that can be offered when someone joins the Army. A solider can receive money for education through the GI Bill along with bonuses for various reasons, such as willingness to ship out quickly. Not only are there money benefits there are also personal benefits. The Army helps an individual with leadership skills that can be used in the community said Iacocca.

"The Army is a positive experience for anyone who comes in," said Iacocca.

One of the great reasons to have an exhibit at the auto show is because it is such a large event and so many people from different areas come to it. This year at the Chicago Auto Show there will be representatives from other states and brigades. This allows the Army to let people know about all the great things it has to offer to people. It also gives the Army a chance to give people from all walks of life a more up close and personal experience with it. People that may never have thought about joining the Army will be able to walk away with a better understanding of it and will be able to see if the Army is right for them.

With today's troubling times, jobs are rare. Not many companies are hiring, but the Army is. With the positive benefits that the Army can give someone personally and professionally, it is a good opportunity for Americans to consider.

"By joining the Army you are more prepared to face life's challenges," said Iacocca.

As a columnist for 8 years for an automotive magazine, and someone who has restored and replicated the cars my friends and I have dreamed about, I know the guys in this incredibly human film. I’ve pitched in with them on builds and restorations. I’ve street raced them. We’ve scared each other stupid on country and canyon roads. I remember the girls and know the women they’ve become. I know this hardscrabble town nested with its swayback barns and ancient silos in the aching beauty of the Catskill Mountains. And like most guys across the country, I know the resonant force of dream and memory that drives a story like Demon on Wheels.
