Featured vehicle on the cover of the Chicago Auto Show program was the 2010 Chevrolet Equinox. A lucky ticket holder won that all-new compact crossover vehicle at the First Look For Charity benefit. About 7,200 people attended the black-tie event held the evening before the annual show opened its 10-day public run, Feb. 12-21. A total of $1,701,012 was raised for 18 area charities. A wide range of vehicles made their public debuts at the 2010 Chicago show, including the next-generation Toyota Avalon, the 75th Anniversary Diamond Edition Chevrolet Suburban and Kia Ray Hybrid concept. This was the 102nd edition of the Chicago Auto Show, which filled more than one million square feet of exhibit space, all on one level in McCormick Place. A stunning display - as much modern art as automotive exhibit, was the upside down Ram Heavy Duty pickup truck cantilevered over the show floor. Motor Trend selected the new Ram its 2010 Truck of the Year.
The 2010 Chevrolet 75th Anniversary Diamond Edition Suburban made its world debut at the Chicago Auto Show on press day Wednesday, February 10. "At Chevrolet we're gratified with the customer acceptance of the Suburban, providing the room and utility they want for 75 years running," said Jim Campbell, Chevrolet general manager. "We look forward to many more years of being the vehicle of choice for families and consumers who desire maximum utility." The first Chevrolet Suburban went on sale in 1935 and became the first vehicle in the industry to achieve a production range of 75 years. To commemorate this milestone, the 75th Anniversary Diamond Edition Suburban was limited to 2,570 units (including 350 for Canada and other markets). It carried up to nine passengers; featured premium LTZ content; a White Diamond tricoat exterior color and cashmere interior; unique 20-inch chrome-clad wheels and new roof rack rails. Special logos adorned the C-pillar sail panel and steering wheel, sill plates and front headrests.
Jim Farley, Group Vice President of Ford Global Marketing, helped debut the 2011 Edge Sport on Feb. 10, during Media Preview days at the 2010 Chicago Auto Show. Dramatic freshening of the new Ford Edge and Edge Sport included extensive exterior redesign, improved materials and styling on the five-passenger interior. The powertrain lineup included North America's first application of Ford's global 2.0 liter EcoBoost I-4, plus the new 285 horsepower 3.5L V-6 and 3.7L V-6 for Edge Sport, that delivered 305 horses. Engines came mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive was standard and AWD an option. New 18-inch tires, were standard on the Edge SEL and Edge Limited, while 20-inchers were optional. The Edge Sport had class-exclusive 22-inch wheels standard.
Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley, second from the left, is seen conversing with 2010 show chairman John Phelan about the 436 horsepower Corvette Grand Sport convertible. It's customary on opening day that the Mayor takes a walking tour of the Chicago Auto Show. On the far left, is show co-chairman Kevin Mize. What makes this photo interesting is a similar shot from the 1957 Chicago Auto Show (See History -1957). In that image, his father Richard J. Daley, mayor of Chicago from 1955-76, is captured in discussion with show officials next to a one-of-a-kind Corvette Super Sport. Like father, like son!
Bob Carter, Toyota Division V.P., unwrapped the boldly redesigned 2011 Avalon at the 2010 Chicago Auto Show. The latest Avalon was introduced in two grades, both well equipped with standard equipment like eight-way leather-trimmed power driver’s seat, back-up camera, dual zone automatic climate control with air filtration, moonroof and 17-inch alloy wheels. Avalon was an Ultra Low Emission Vehicle that came powered by a 285 horspower, 24-valve, dual-overhead cam 3.5 liter V-6 that produced 268 horses and came mated to a multi-mode six-speed automatic transmission. A new five-passenger cabin featured coordinated colors and rich wood-grain materials. Set in a new instrument panel was the ‘highly readable’ Optitron gauges that used graduated white illumination with white pointers inside smoked lenses. Consumers had a choice of nine exterior colors including three new colors: Zephyr Blue Metallic, Cypress Pearl and Sizzling Crimson Mica.
Derrick Kuzak, Group VP of Ford Product Development, introduced the 2011 Transit Connect Electric at the 2010 Chicago Auto Show. The 2011 Transit Connect Electric used an all-electric, zero-emission Force Drive electric powertrain with a top speed of 75 mph and targeted range of up to 80 miles on a full charge. Either 240 volt or standard 120 volt outlets could be used for recharging. Electric vehicles require no oil changes or tune-ups, have no belts to wear out or break and no spark plugs or injectors to clean or adjust. Plus there is no exhaust system to replace and no liquid fuel system to freeze or clog. The Transit Connect Electric was billed as ideal for fleet owners that have well-defined routes of predictable distances and a central location for daily recharging. Load length was 72.6 inches, or more than six feet of cargo floor space.

On the evening before the 2010 Chicago Auto Show opened its 10-day public run, about 7,200 people attended the First Look for Charity, helping to raise $1,701,012. Eighteen area charities shared in the money raised by the benevolent event. Proudly holding the oversized check are auto show chairman John Phelan, past CATA president and auto show General Manager Jerry Cizek, show co-chairman Kevin Mize and Larry Wert, president and general manager of Chicago’s NBC 5.
Photographer Oscar Einzig captured the moment just before the ribbon was cut to officially open the 2010 Chicago Auto Show to the general public. On stage, left to right are, Chicago Auto Show General Manager Dave Sloan, Co-General Manager Jerry Cizek, Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority CEO Juan Ochoa, Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White, Show Chairman John Phelan, show Co-Chairman Kevin Mize, McCormick Place General Manager David Causton and President of the Chicago Convention and Tourism Bureau Tim Roby. Since 1935, the Chicago Automobile Trade Association (CATA) has sponsored the show.
Consumer voters at the 2010 show proclaimed the 2011 Chevrolet Volt the Chicago Auto Show "Best Green Vehicle." The four-door, four-passenger Volt was a plug-in range-extended electric car with an on-board gasoline generator. It had a large lithium-ion battery connected to an electric motor that propeled the car to up to 40 miles on electricity. When the battery is depleted, an engine/generator seamlessly operated to extend the total driving range to about 300 miles. Best Green Vehicle was one of five categories in the ‘Best of Show’ balloting, which was conducted over the 10-day public run of the 2010 show.
Lovely twin "sisters" drew added attention to the Fiat exhibit during the 2010 Chicago Auto Show, where they answered all questions... about the subcompact 500 two-door hatchbacks. Fiat returned to North America, after opting out of the US market in 1983. The first of several vehicles to be sold here, the 2011 Fiat 500 was modified for the US, and played a part in Chrysler Group's recovery plans. Assembled in Mexico with 1.4 liter four-cylinder engines built in Michigan, the 2011 Fiat 500 was designed as a front engine car, compared to the original 500 that was rear engine powered. In the photo, the white car is the gasoline-fueled version, while the gunmetal gray 500 gave a preview of the lithium-ion battery electric model planned for 2012.
For the entire 10-day run of the 2010 Chicago Auto Show, consumers had a chance to experience the on- and off-road capabilities of Jeep vehicles without leaving the show floor. 'Camp Jeep' was a 25,000 sq.ft. exhibit with sections to demonstrate ground clearance, traction, stablity, articulation and suspension. With company drivers at the wheel, riders took on creative obstacle courses was an 18-foot mobile mountain and a 12 x 15-foot section of terrain simulating fallen logs measuring 18 inches in diameter. Attendees also experienced the adrenaline rush of looking nearly straight up or straight down as they navigated a 45-degree wedge to demonstrate the vehicle's body articulation. Each ride lasted approximately five minutes.
According to crowds who attended the 2010 Chicago Auto Show, the choice for the “Vehicle I'd most like to have in my driveway,” was the Ford Shelby GT. That was the consensus of consumers' voting after the 10-day public run of the show. This 21st century muscle car was a product of Ford's Special Vehicle Team (SVT), equipped with a supercharged, intercooled 540 horsepower DOHC V-8 linked to an upgraded six-speed manual gearbox. Available in coupe or convertible versions, the chassis was enhanced and the forged 19-inch aluminum wheels (18 in on the ragtop) were framed by Goodyear F1 Supercar tires. Ford also grabbed the titled for “Best Exhibit” in 2010, which made it two years in a row. That was not a big surprise, as it was a fun booth to visit. Along with the wide variety of Ford vehicles on display, there were more than a half dozen interactive displays.
If a picture is worth a thousand words, then the adjacent photo speaks volumes. Notice the starry-eyed gaze and beaming smile on the pretty blond behind the wheel of a 2010 Lincoln MKZ. Having the opportunity to get close-up and personal with nearly 1,000 vehicles was one of the many joys consumers experienced by attending the 2010 Chicago Auto Show. The upscale Lincoln MKZ was a five-passenger, mid-size sedan that received an all-new front end and new decklid with LED taillamps for 2010. Power was supplied by a 3.5 liter V-6 that developed 263 horsepower and came connected to a six-speed SelectShift automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive was standard with all-wheel drive available. New for 2010, the MKZ featured a sport version with special sport suspension tuning, 18-inch Euroflange polished wheels, unique darkened grille, darkened headlamps and an interior with contrasting piping and special appliqués.
Drawing large crowds into the Audi exhibit at the 2010 Chicago Auto Show was the rare and exclusive 2011 R8 Spyder. With a mid-mounted V-10 engine, Quattro all-wheel drive and an aluminum/magnesium Audi Space Frame, the R8 Spyder offered handling and balance worthy of any racetrack machine. The high-revving 5.2 liter V-10 produced 525 horses; was capable of launching the R8 Spyder from 0-60 in 4.0 seconds and a top speed of 195 mph. Beyond the open top, other visible differences between the R8 Spyder and the R8 Coupe models was the absence of the signature sideblades on the Spyder, use of dramatic aluminum optic vents on the new rear engine cover and aluminum A-pillars. While most of the Audis at that Chicago show were displayed in white for a unified look, several models, including the R8 Spyder, were finished in a non-production dark gold paint for added impact.
Drawing a lot of attention during the 2010 Chicago Auto Show was the 2011 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, that replaced the 2009 SL series. The new SLS featured Gullwing doors and front end style inspired by the legendary 300SLs of the 1950s. The 2011 SLS became the first M-B designed by AMG, the brand's exotic engine specialist. Ultra-performance via the 6.3 liter front/mid naturally aspirated V-8 that produced 563 horsepower and got to the rear wheels through a seven-speed dual clutch transaxle. As a result the 3,573 pound projectile was capable of 0-60 in 3.8 seconds and hit a top speed of 196 mph before the governor bit. From classic grille to near six foot long hood to rear spoiler, a lightweight aluminum spaceframe bodyshell produced serious handling dynamics and kept everything in place.

Exotic sports cars like the dynamically-styled 2011 Lexus LFA, are always popular at the auto show, as was the case at the 2010 Chicago presentation. The LFA served as the flagship for the F portfolio of Lexus performance models. Its front-mid engine layout, long wheelbase, short overhangs and snug, low-slung two-passenger cabin identified it as a 'supercar.' Only 500 were to be built worldwide with each to be hand-assembled by skilled technicians at a rate of no more than 20 per month. The rear-wheel drive LFA was powered by a sophisticated high-revving 9,000 rpm (redline) 4.8 liter V-10 engine that generated 552 horsepower and was capable of 202 mph performance. This specially-developed powerplant was paired with a unique six-speed Automated Sequential Gearbox with paddle-activated shifts. To deliver a light, incredibly strong and impact-resistant structure, the LFA featured advanced Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) construction for its chassis and much of its bodywork..

Rolling on cast alloy eight-spoke wheels, 16-inch front and 17-inch rear, the Elise sprinted from 0 to 60 in 4.9-seconds, and topped out at 150 mph, all with world class handling. The racing cockpit housed sport seats covered in black cloth with Probax anatomical padding, a starter button and carpeted foot mats.
Beginning in 2008, the Chicago Automobile Trade Association has dedicated auto show floor space to a photograph journey through the history of the annual Chicago Auto Show (CAS). The first official auto show was held in 1901, and has been a major part of the city ever since. Due to World War II, there were no auto shows held anywhere from 1941-1949. On Feb. 18, 1950, after a nine year absence the first post-war show in the nation resumes in Chicago at the International Amphitheathre. The show’s One Hundred Anniversary was held in 2001, and in 2008, Chicago celebrates its 100th auto show, and becomes the first in the world to achieve that milestone. The retrospective exhibits are under the direction of CAS Historian M.J. Frumkin.
At the 2010 Chicago Auto Show, Hyundai unveiled its motorsports program in the U.S. with the help of drift champion Rhys Millen. Millen took the already light weight Genesis Coupe and made it even lighter by replicating the hood, deck lid, roof, doors, fenders, front fascia and side skirts out of carbon fiber. The interior had a custom-fabricated eight-point safety cage and firewall. A single Sparco racing seat further protected the driver in the overhauled cockpit. Power was supplied by a Hyundai Lambda 3.8 liter V-6 engine, enhanced by a Turbonetics turbocharger, mated to a HKS sequential transmission. The end result was a Genesis Coupe that produced 550 horsepower and 520 lb.-ft. of torque.

With Chrysler Group controlled by Fiat Group of Italy, someone must have asked what happens when you join styling cues from both entities? For the 2010 Chicago Auto Show, the result was a nameless design study that utilized a Lancia Delta hatchback from Italy and a Chrysler grille. The Lancia was shipped to Chrysler here and the frontal styling was applied. This was one of many experiments in the Americanization of Fiat vehicles for U.S. consumption.

A popular display in the GMC exhibit during the 2010 Chicago Auto Show was for the Granite concept, which featured General Motors' new 'urban-industrial design aesthetic.' The body had a series of complex, intersecting planes and angles, and GMC's signature grille design. Granite's four-doors were hinged on each side to open like a set of French doors. There was no pillar between the front and rear doors, making the Granite easier to enter, exit and load, even with bulky items. Among the most functional elements of the Granite concept were reconfigurable seats that could flip up and fold in toward the center console, which created a long, unobstructed storage space. Power came from a 1.4-liter turbocharged engine, matched with a 6-speed transmission. Discussion during the show was that a production vehicle based on the Granite concept would debut in 2013, making it the smallest GMC ever, a full 2 feet shorter than the 2010 Terrain compact crossover.

The futuristic exterior styling was matched by a flowing interior with adjustable Transparent Organic Light Emitting Diode displays mounted on the steering column. An additional side-attraction within the Hyundai exhibit was a kids' soccer area.
Kia debuted the Ray plug-in hybrid concept during a press conference at the 2010 Chicago Auto Show. As part of Kia's EcoDynamics sub-brand, the Ray demonstrated eye-catching styling with a reduced environmental footprint. The experimental vehicle was composed of lightweight and recycled materials, with a flowing profile, flush surfaces and pronounced rear shoulder ending in a slightly high deck lid for reduced drag. Power was supplied by an all-aluminum 153-horsepower Gasoline Direct Injected (GDI) 1.4-liter engine mated to a permanently-engaged fixed ratio CVT, used in combination with a 78kw electric motor and lithium-polymer battery. It was capable of driving distances of more than 50 miles using its electric motor on a single charge, and had a fuel economy rating of more than 202 miles per gallon, with a total range of 746 miles. Based on the Forte platform, Ray was front-wheel drive with four-wheel independent suspension and offered four-passenger seating with hexagonal roof-top solar cells embedded in the glass roof panel.

Looking much like the production Volvo C30 hatchback, the Electric C30 prototype at the 2010 Chicago Show featured similar safety, handling and 20.2 cu. ft. of cargo room, but it was powered solely by electricity. The electric motor was housed under the hood in place of the conventional power plant. It gave the four-passenger vehicle a driving range of approximate 93 miles and a top speed of about 80 mph. A lithium/iron battery pack was to take eight hours to charge on household current. Volvo built 50 Electric C30s for study and during the 2010 Chicago Auto Show a spokesperson stated that Volvo was committed to introduce a new hybrid model for 2012.
