MIND Research Institute has joined forces with the Chicago Auto Show to get families talking about math and get students geared up for the National K-12 Game-a-thon. Math is all around us - especially at an auto show. Visitors to the MathMINDs booth on Family Day, Monday, Feb. 15, can participate in the first-ever Math Power Game (MPG) Challenge, a series of puzzles and questions that entice the whole family to explore geometry, algebra and proportional reasoning throughout the nation's largest auto show.
"We're excited to partner with the Chicago Auto Show to give local families an opportunity to see how math is everywhere around them," said Beth Garrow, philanthropic partnership director for MIND Research Institute. "Many parents have math anxiety, but we don't have to pass that on to our children, and something as simple as playing games together or noticing how math is part of a car company's logo can help change attitudes."
After discovering first-hand that math is everywhere at the Chicago Auto Show, students can start thinking about their own math game. To spark their creativity, MathMINDs will offer visitors the chance to play some tantalizingly tricky ancient math games such as:
Achi, a logic game played by the Asante people of Ghana, reminiscent of modern Tic Tac Toe;
Gulugufe, a two or four-person strategy game, similar to checkers; and Dara, an ancestor of chess, that was originally played by the Dakarkari children in what is now the Sokota State region of Nigeria.
Guests can also get a jump-start on MIND's 2016 National K-12 Game-a-thon. The annual Game-a-thon invites students from across the country to design, build and share their own math game. Top teams are inducted into the Game-a-thon Hall of Fame and honored at the national Math Fair
