Mazda Miata Returns To Its Roots at the 2015 Chicago Auto Show

Mazda introduced a number of factory accessories on its showcase MX-5 design concept during the Social Media Preview of the 2015 Chicago Auto Show. The original, first-generation Miata proved to be a sensation at its Chicago Auto Show debut over 26 years ago, in 1989. Designed for the sports car lover, the new MX-5 accessories design concept is geared for those looking to personalize their cars.

“As more and more things are added to the car, they get larger and they get heavier,” said Rod McLaughlin vehicle line manager, Mazda North American Operation. “We wanted to reverse that trend and we’ve done that through modeling the Miata after our 2016 Global MX-5 Cup car – reducing the weight, making it shorter, pulling the engine back and lowering it, which has allowed for more head and leg room.”

Also being shown for the first time was the MX-5 merchandise design concepts from Mazda's five-piece Aero Kit. The kit includes design options for the brakes, wheels, a spoiler and a luggage rack.

“We wanted something that would stay true to the original design, but evolve for the next generation,” said McLaughlin. “It’s got to be lightweight, affordable and most of all, its got to be fun to drive.”

The Miata MX-5 accessories design concept is expected to go on sale in the late summer of 2015.
