GM Announces Apple CarPlay, Android Auto in 14 Models

Posted by: Casey O'Connell

If you thought your world was centered around mobile technology before, just wait. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility are about to become much more prevalent in vehicles thanks, in part, to Chevrolet. The Bowtie brand announced that Android Auto and Apple CarPlay will be available in fourteen Chevrolet 2016 model year vehicles. By incorporating this mobile screen-sharing technology into its vehicles, Chevrolet is looking to give the consumer the best connected and safest mobile car experience.

There are 2.3 billion people with smart phones, many of which want to step inside their car and be connected to their favorite apps. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay allow the consumer to do just that simply by plugging in their phone to a USB in the vehicle. Once doing so, many of their phones apps will appear on the center-stack screen. These apps can be controlled by dashboard and steering wheel buttons, touchscreen and voice control.

The idea behind this new technology is that consumers will be able to interact with their smartphone with their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road. These systems are built around the smartphone features consumers need the most while driving, such as navigation, call and text, music and select third party apps. Only approved apps will be accessible while Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are in use – you will not see Angry Birds show up on screen. Make note that Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are additional features to these 2016 model vehicles, but Chevy’s MyLink infotainment system can still be operated.

When first hearing about this new technology, I assumed that it would only be available in high-end luxury cars that I would not be purchasing any time in the near future. This is not the case, as Chevrolet wants to provide this connectivity to all their consumers, no matter their price point. Here is a full list of all of the 2016 model cars that will be compatible to Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, which is offered at no additional cost:

  • Camaro
  • Camaro Convertible
  • Colorado
  • Corvette
  • Corvette Convertible
  • Cruze
  • Impala
  • Malibu
  • Silverado
