CHICAGO (Feb. 10, 2017) - Volkswagen unveiled the Atlas Weekend Edition concept at the 2017 Chicago Auto Show Media Preview. The seven-passenger concept pays tribute to Volkswagen's go-anywhere spirit and provides enhanced versatility and cargo space, perfect for weekend warriors.

"Atlas has brought us into a segment we've never been in before," said Will Gock, senior product communications specialist for Volkswagen.

The Weekend Edition features all-wheel drive and an eight-speed, 3.6-liter VR6 engine delivering 276 horsepower. It boasts 18-inch Prisma wheels in anthracite gray and a modern-style pop-up roof that expands to create 17.7 cubic-feet of cargo space.

The concept also comes with a universal tablet mount that connects seamlessly with a variety of tablets and smartphones so drivers and passengers can control the entertainment and media functions from their own devices. A heavy-duty trunk liner, a privacy cargo cover, all-weather rubber mats, splashguards and wheel locks were all designed with the adventure-seeker in mind.

The 2017 Volkswagen Atlas, slated to include many of the latest Weekend Edition accessories, will go on sale in spring 2017.

In addition to The Weekend concept, Volkswagen's all-new long-wheelbase 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan made its first Chicago appearance since its unveiling last month. The SUV now comes with an available third row and an increase in cargo space of up to 57 percent over earlier models.

The new Tiguan has been extended more than 10 inches and features a wider, lower stance. It's powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter TSI I-4 engine delivering 184 horsepower and 221 lb.-ft. of torque and comes equipped with available all-wheel drive.

"Tiguan is quite a bit larger for 2018, but it's a really clean, handsome-looking car," said Gock. "Both the Atlas Weekend and Tiguan are going to stand out on the road. They are going to be unmistakably Volkswagen."
