2022 Ford Explorer: The Ford Explorer sees the addition of a new ST-Line trim in 2022, which focuses on sportier exterior and interior design without the added performance of the full-fledged ST trim. The Explorer is assembled at Ford's Chicago Assembly Plant. The three-row crossover seats 7 passengers and is only available as a 4-door wagon. Competitors include the Chevrolet Traverse, Dodge Durango, Honda Pilot, Nissan Pathfinder, Toyota Highlander and Volkswagen Atlas. High-performance and hybrid variants are available.
Eight trims are offered: Base, XLT, ST-Line, Timberline, Limited ST, King Ranch and Platinum. (Limited and Platinum are available as hybrid.) Four engines are available: A turbocharged 2.3-liter 4-cylinder that produces 300 horsepower, a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 that produces 365 horsepower (400 in ST), and a 3.3-liter gas/electric hybrid V6 that produces 318 horsepower. All engines pair to a 10-speed automatic transmission. Rear-wheel drive is standard with all-wheel-drive being optional. Maximum towing capacity is rated at 5,600 pounds.
The Explorer ST is considered the high-performance variant and also the range-topping model of the lineup. It is equipped with sporty bucket seats, 21-inch black wheels, vented front and rear brakes, as well as high-performance brake pads and tires. Pricing ranges from $33,000 to $60,000.
