smart Innovates The Future Of Car Design

Posted by: Marissa Salinas

This year's Chicago Auto Show has really stepped up its game.  The displays, presentations, newest car designs and countless interactive components makes the Chicago Auto Show a must see.  Now, I'm all for sitting inside a ridiculously expensive Audi or driving a simulated Cadillac car on a racetrack, but a concept all the way from Europe has stolen my attention.

We all know that mini-cars are a 'European' thing, but they are starting to make its presence to America.  As gas prices try to stabilize and the availability of parking is diminishing, driving compact cars are the way to go.  For smart, a small European automaker, they are capitalizing this opportunity and offering current and future consumers a pretty unique deal.

What appealed to me most, however, was its "smart Expressions" tool.  This tool allows you to tailor the exterior of your car with custom paint and vehicle wraps.  You can personalize your car however you like, choosing a unique shade of blue or "wrapping" your car in hounds tooth or an art portrait.  The smart website also features a design studio which allows consumers to play around with different colors and wraps.  Providing consumers this unique experience to modify your perfect car allows smart to cater to those who truly look for that one-of-a-kind car.

There is no doubt that innovation, expression and creativity are the key factors for a successful auto show.  While there are other big and well-known manufacturers that have accomplished that, I am impressed that a small car manufacturer can offer its customers such a personal appeal. For me, smart took the top honors.  Now, I wonder if I can customize my smart car with rhinestones...?
