There's A First Time For Everything

Posted by: Samantha Zurawski

Luxury Cars, Chicago Blackhawks, and Churros, Oh My! This is one newbie's look at the Chicago Auto Show.

I’ve lived near Chicago my whole life but I’ve never attended the Chicago Auto Show. My brother is a mechanic and my Great Grandfather collects old cars but I’ve never been. It’s kind of crazy when I think about it. I make the trek to the city from my hometown in Cary almost weekly over the summer. I take the Metra inbound to enjoy the Taste of Chicago, the local museums, and take picture after picture in the infamous bean. After Day One of being a Chicago Auto Show Intern, I’m really starting to ask myself why I’ve never made the trek to the Auto Show.

Sure, Chicago has been renamed “Chi-beria” this year, but inside the McCormick place it is definitely heating up. When I walked onto the show floor for the first time I was completely engulfed by the automotive magic. My eyes darted back and forth between the pretty new Ford Mustangs and the shiny Volkswagen convertibles. At that moment I could forget that my current mode of transportation is a trusty 2004 Buick Regal that will hit 100,000 miles in the very new future. Instead I envisioned myself off-roading in a new Jeep or causing some trouble downtown in my new Audi.

Even though I would never consider myself a “car enthusiast”, the Chicago Auto Show still has enough to keep me interested. I mean, who can resist an opportunity to see Blackhawks hockey legend Denis Savard? I couldn’t call myself a true hockey fan if I didn’t stop by and enjoy the Chevy Dealers Family Fun Zone and try to “Shoot the Puck.” But if hockey isn’t your thing, keep your eye out for appearances and autograph signings with Chicago Bears players instead.

Plus all that walking around is surely going to build up your appetite. There’s no shortage of food to be had either. The food court is fully loaded with treats including, obviously, the Chicago Style hotdog. If you’re looking for something sweet though, my recommendation would be the Churros. I haven’t had one just yet but my mouth started watering the first time somebody passed me by with one. So somebody eat one for me!

The auto show has the cars, the sports, the food, and most importantly the soul that is unique only to events in Chicago. So be brave Chicagoans and Midwesterners alike, make the trek through the polar vortex to the Chicago Auto Show! You’ll have a great time and you might even learn a thing or two about cars on the way.
