The Final Volkswagen Type 2 Kombi Arrives In Germany

Posted by: Julie Piatek

The last Volkswagen Type 2 Kombi’s (think microbus) rolled off the assembly line in December 2013 at the automaker’s plant in Brazil. It was one of the 1,200 Last Edition Volkswagen Type 2’s assembled in the closing months of production.  This specific Volkswagen Kombi Type 2 is now in Germany. It will be displayed in Hanover, Germany at the Volkswagen Commercial Vehicle headquarters with other distinguished cars, trucks, and buses.

The Kombi went through many changes throughout the years.  The largest change was when it from air-cooled engines to water-cooled engines in 1991, along with the interior and exterior receiving upgrades.  Despite all of that, the basic shell and running gear remained the same.

The Volkswagen Type 2 Kombi iconic shape was a big part of the Free Love movement in the ’60s. Kombi was built for 63 years, but VW decided to stop production in 2013. To celebrate the legacy the van has left, Volkswagen’s Brazilian outfit, which built that last Kombi, put together a tribute video.
