Scion Gets Back to Its Roots

Posted by: Colleen Moran

Toyota’s youth-oriented division recently launched two new small cars for 2016, the subcompact iA sedan and the iM hatchback. Scion took the opportunity to discuss these latest models and the ad campaign during the Midwest Automotive Media Association (MAMA) Fall Rally, hosted at the Autobahn Country Club of Joliet.

iM

The largest of the two new 2016 models, the compact iM hatchback has been compared to the Toyota Corrolla sedan, with the exception that it’s “wagon-like.” It packs a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine and a choice of a six-speed stick shift or a gearless CVT automatic transmission with both a sport setting and a manual mode that emulates seven shift points.  The iM starts at $18,460 for the base model.

Sharing components with a Mazda2, the iA is engineered to exceed expectations for an entry-level car. The iA packs a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine with an estimated 42 mpg in highway driving that mates to either a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic with a selectable sport mode. Additionally, the car comes with a standard low-speed accident avoidance system to help the driver avoid or, in the very least, minimize the damage of collisions. The iA starts at $16,495 for the six-speed manual transmission model.

Both the iA and iM are on sale now. You’ll also be able to see them on Scion’s stand at the 2016 Chicago Auto Show.
