The Ford Mustang is Returning to the Place its Story Began 50 Years Ago

Posted by: Julie Piatek

Ford is celebrating the Mustang’s 50th anniversary in style at the New York Auto Show. They are repeating how they introduced the Mustang 50 years ago, by placing it on top of the Empire State Building.

You may be wondering how the Mustang will get up 86 stories of the Empire State Building, simple: the elevators. There is one problem though, the Empire State Building was built in 1931, and the elevators are not equipped to handle a modern car. To solve this issue Ford cut the Mustang into three main sections. Once the Mustang arrives, the Ford technicians will have just six hours to put it back together.

The original Ford Mustang appeared on the Empire State Building in 1965. The Mustang back then was smaller than it is today, but it also had to be disassembled in order to fit in the elevators.

Fans are allowed to go to the Empire State Building observation deck and see the all new Mustang convertible from 8 a.m. to 2 a.m., April 16-17.
