A Glimpse of What's to Come

Posted by: Aurora Felty

Yesterday afternoon the group of Bradley University interns toured both the North and South halls of McCormick Place. Sure, it was enormous and yes, there were lots of cars, but it was what we didn’t see that excited me. For instance, when we walked by Ford they were busy building their press conference staging area. The stage was big but not over-the-top, with a simple blue-sky motif. Of course there were areas for cars to be displayed. I’m expecting them to unveil a new, imaginative concept because they’ve invested so much time and effort in their staging area. Then again, I could be totally off base, but I want to remain optimistic that whatever they choose to showcase will be amazing.

Manufacturers are putting up eye-catching and, a few times, interactive displays. Some of the coolest (according to me) include dinosaurs, simulators, test-tracks and a car-revealing music video. Some of the cars are like nothing I’ve ever seen before and I’ve only seen about half of what’s to come! New concept cars are tapping in to ‘touch’ technology with features that start a car by pressing a button on a smart phone…and I thought remote starters were cool. While techy gadgets blow me away, I usually don’t fare so well with them. So, my favorite car so far is a model from Suzuki whose bright orange color drew me in the second I walked into the North Hall. With day one of set-up done and gone, I can only imagine what exciting concepts I will see today.
