2013 TOYOTA PRIUS PLUG-IN HYBRID: On display along with the three other members of the Toyota Prius Hybrid clan (Prius Liftback, Prius v and Prius c), is the 2013 Prius Plug-In Hybrid. The five-passenger Plug-in Hybrid is distinguished from its sibling by exclusive trim, badges, blue-accent headlights and battery charging door. Family genes include Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive system with dual high-output electric motors, one 60kw (80 horsepower) unit that mainly works to power the compact, lightweight transaxle, and another smaller motor that works as the electric power source for battery regeneration and as a starter for the gas engine. That set-up is built around a specially adapted 98hp 1.8 liter four-cylinder engine that runs on the Atkinson cycle and contributes to a maximum 134 total system horsepower. A full charge by an external AC outlet takes approximately 2.5-3.0 hours via a 120V household outlet with a dedicated 15-amp circuit, or 1.5 hours using a 240V outlet. Even with the addition of the new onboard battery charging system and larger 176-lb. Li-ion battery pack, the Plug-in Hybrid weighs just 123 lbs. more than the standard Prius Liftback. The Prius Plug-in is available in 15 states, qualifies for a Federal tax credit of up to $2,500; is also eligible for the State of California's HOV lane sticker - and as of Sept. 2012, has sold over 6,000 units in first six months on the market.
