2013 HONDA INSIGHT: For the record, Honda began hybrid vehicle sales in U.S. in 1999 with the 2000 Honda Insight, the first gasoline-electric hybrid vehicle sold in America. At last year's Chicago Auto Show, Honda displayed an extensively updated Honda Insight, and returning for the 105th show is the 2013 edition. The Insight three distinct models start with the value-oriented base model that is simply designated as "Insight." Movin'-on up is the LX trim level, and at the top, the Insight EX. Honda's Insight and Insight LX models have new 15-inch wheel covers and the Insight EX has newly styled 15-inch alloy wheels. All five-door models offer versatility with the 60/40 split rear seatbacks fold down to create a large 31.5 cubic-foot cargo space and make it easy to mix passengers and cargo. The Insight LX come fitted in premium seat fabric, while the Insight EX is upholstered with a combination of synthetic leather and premium fabric. Excellent city/highway/combined rating of 41/44/42 mpg is due to an Integrated Motor Assist system comprised of a 1.3-liter i-VTEC gasoline four-cylinder engine and a 10-kilowatt electric motor. The combination develops 98 horsepower to the front-wheels via a continuously variable transmission (CVT) that increases MPG. On EX models, the steering wheel includes paddle shifters, which allow manually shifting though a range of seven fixed ratios for a sporty driving experience. Additional electronic marvels available on the Honda Insight are the satellite-linked navigation system with voice recognition, a rearview camera and drive-by-wire throttle system.
