2016 BMW i3: A must-see vehicle in the BMW exhibit is the 2016 BMW i3 electric car, constructed in a revolutionary way from next-generation materials. This is BMW's first truly purpose-built electric car and the first vehicle to utilizing the new "i sub-brand. For 2016, the BMW i3 comes in three different worlds: Mega, Giga, and Tera, all featuring LifeDrive architecture concept comprised of two modules; the Life Module, and the Drive Module. Think of the Life Module as the passenger cabin, or greenhouse. It is the first-ever mass produced Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) passenger cell in the automotive business. The Drive Module, which is constructed out of 100% aluminum, consists of the 22-kWh, 450 lb. lithium-ion battery, electric drive train, MacPherson strut and five-link rear suspension system and structural and crash components. The result is an electric car that weighs about 2,700-lbs (preliminary US figures). With the battery mounted in the rear, close to the drive wheels, the i3 gives impressive performance characteristics while also providing better traction. Assisting the eDrive rear-wheel drive powertrain, are unique 19-inch tires that have low rolling resistance, and frame the light-alloy wheels. Offering a small turning circle of 32.3 feet, - a major benefit to driving in the city - the i3 still has a perfect 50-50 weight distribution.
