2015 BMW i8 Hybrid: One of the few places you will see the exotic BMW i8 Hybrid sports car is at the 107th annual Chicago Auto Show, Feb.14-22, 2015. BMW touts the i8 as “Progress in Motion,” due to the highly emotional design, dynamic performance, and fuel efficiency and emissions figures worthy of a compact car. Groundbreaking eDrive plug-in hybrid technology combines the modified electric drive system from the BMW i3 producing 131horsepower at the front wheels, and a three-cylinder TwinPower turbo motor producing 231hp at the rear wheels. Working in tandem, they allow the two drive systems to display their respective talents, delivering drive performance of a true sports car, with an acceleration of 0-to-60 mph in 4.4 seconds, in a vehicle that is also capable of achieving up to an estimated 94 mpg. It can operate solely on electric power up to 22 miles, which means no driving tailpipe emissions to a maximum eDrive speed of 75 mph. Visually, the exterior includes sweeping lines, short front/rear overhangs, and flat silhouette lend the vehicle a striking appearance. Note the large, transparent greenhouse over the 2+2 cabin, and how the doors swing upwards like wings. Thanks to the dual drive systems, all four wheels of the BMW i8 Concept can be driven at the same time, similar to an all-wheel-drive vehicle. This solution combines the advantages of front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive to ensure the optimal dynamic drive configuration as required.
