2014 MERCEDES-BENZ SL: Lighter and more rigid, with a sophisticated all-aluminum bodyshell, the 2014 Mercedes-Benz SL takes the meaning of the famous letters "SL" - super lightweight - quite literally. Weight reduction across the board is one of the most outstanding design characteristics of the new SL, and continues a tradition that began 60 years ago. Trim levels include SL550 and SL63 AMG, both two-passenger, rear-wheel drive convertibles. The SL550 features a 5.5-liter V-8 that creates a healthy 382 horsepower and 391 lb. ft. of torque. For more thrills, the SL63 AMG packs a 6.2L V-8 that cranks-out 518hp and 465 lb. ft. of torque. Standard and only transmission for either engine is a fuel-saving seven-speed automatic gearbox. Most of the body panels are aluminum, while high-strength steel is used in the roof pillars. Overall, the new SL body is about 20 percent stiffer than the car it replaces. All 2014 SL models come standard with Active Body Control, and available panoramic glass panel for the folding hardtop. Inside the new SL, a standard harman/kardon Logic 7 digital surround-sound system features award-winning FrontBass, in which the bass speakers are mounted in the front firewall so the two front frame members also serve as large bass boxes.
