The gang heads to Sin City

Earlier this week, Director of Communications Paul Brian, Director of Special Events & Exhibitor Relations Sandi Potempa and Director of Auto Show Operations Chris Konecki jetted off to Las Vegas for the annual SEMA Show to check out the current buzz around the auto industry. And even though the trio just returned to the office, I was eager to speak with them about their SEMA experience.

SEMA Show CarThe SEMA (Specialty Equipment Market Association) Show houses more than 2,000 exhibitors in 10,000 booths displaying products for more than 100,000 professionals and is held in Las Vegas for the length of four November days. The Las Vegas Convention Center contains four exhibit halls filled with “cool cars, cool cats and cool stuff,” in the words of Sandi Potempa. Since I wasn’t physically there, Sandi provided me with an overview of the show: “Virtual automotive eye-candy store.” That seems to sum it up pretty well, but if Sandi had three words to describe her experience? “My aching back.” If Chris had to sum up the show in three words? “Coolcars, gadgets and technology.” I’m not sure “coolcars” counts as one word, but we’ll let it slide.

Overall, Paul thought the show was a “good first volley for the auto show season.” Paul noted the high number of interested buyers—small business owners who believe the economy is on the mend. He also noted the many celebrity appearances including Danica Patrick, Brandon Bernstein, John Force and Ashley Force. Paul was surprised to see massaging chairs in the bloggers’ lounge that he affectionately described as a “South Beach mojito bar at 9 p.m.” He won’t mention the names of the individuals receiving massages as it might ruin their reputations; however, he will hint that they cover the auto industry every week…

Paul’s favorite part of the trip? The cars, of course. His personal beloved were the Chevy Camaro concept cars (http://www.autoblog.com/2008/11/03/sema-2008-camaro-ls7-concept-revealed/). Oh, and he also thoroughly enjoyed the pulled pork sandwiches.
