"TOO MANY WHITE CARS"

http://www.chicagoautoshow.com/multimedia/blog/view_comments.asp?BLOGGER_ID=&POST_ID=140&SHOW_COMMENTS=y

We got a few thousand survey responses from online ticket buyers, and some of them are absolute gems. Here are a few suggestions we're amp;quot;working onamp;quot; for next year.

amp;quot;I liked the balloon slide.amp;quot;
Not really a suggestion, but we're glad the cars made such an impression.

amp;quot;My husband wants more beautiful women modelling next to the cars like at the Fiat 500 :-)amp;quot;
Your husband has great taste, the Fiat 500 was a hit in Europe.

amp;quot;Remove all the carpeting! I was getting shocked by static electricity every time I touched a car!amp;quot;
I had the same problem, but I ran with it. Shuffle your feet, then shake hands with a salesperson.

amp;quot;ARRANGE FOR LESS SNOW AND COLDamp;quot;
We've got a plan for that. Next year, we're going to hold the show indoors.

amp;quot;Maybe have two Starbucks stands instead of just one?amp;quot;
Got it. We'll put them right next to each other so they're easy to find.

amp;quot;TOO MANY WHITE CARSamp;quot;
That sounds like a personal problem.

amp;quot;Free admission to people who submit this survey. That's the ticket.amp;quot;
What a shame, the survey's anoynymous and we're all out of time.

In all seriousness, thanks for the great responses. We're already abuzz with ideas and upgrades for the 2011 show.

What I learned in a week at the Auto Show

http://www.chicagoautoshow.com/multimedia/blog/view_comments.asp?BLOGGER_ID=&POST_ID=136&SHOW_COMMENTS=y

As the week is coming to a close, the other interns and I are really starting to realize the scope of what we have taken part in and the valuable experience we have received. Not only have we learned how the media center operates, but we also sat in on press conferences as though we were working members of the press and wrote capsules to post on the Chicago Auto Show website. Several events took place where we had a break from working and the opportunity to meet automotive and public relations professionals, giving us the chance to further our connections and find out what their jobs entail on a day to day basis.

In the weeks leading up to this internship, I was somewhat nervous about covering a press conference. I'd never been to a one and had only written press releases and coverage for a few musicians outside of classes and school projects. We were in pairs this week for each event we covered, and my partner and I made sure to arrive over 20 minutes early for our first conference with Ford. Much of the media had arrived that morning due to plane delays and cancellations from severe winter storms around the nation and were shooting photos and video footage everywhere. Though we sat with the rest of the media for each conference, I'm sure everyone wondered what media outlet had young women our age covering for them!

During our many trips around the show floor in the days before and while it was open to the media, I met people in marketing and public relations for several car companies and had the chance to interview the Product and Technology Public Relations specialist for Mercedes-Benz. Getting the chance to attend the First Look for Charity may be a once in a lifetime thing for me, but by the time we made it to Thursday night we felt as though we owned the place, having seen all the cars, presentations and people several times since we arrived Monday.

It has been the chance of a lifetime, and I have to say none of us are really looking forward to returning to school next week and are ready to head out into the real world instead.

Automakers Are Getting Social

http://www.chicagoautoshow.com/multimedia/blog/view_comments.asp?BLOGGER_ID=&POST_ID=134&SHOW_COMMENTS=y

At a press conference for Suzuki I learned Ashton Kutcher and Ellen DeGeneres have more Twitter followers than the entire populations of Ireland, Norway and Panama combined. Carmakers know that they need to be more involved in social media to connect with customers and solve problems quickly. Most are establishing Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube pages, but Suzuki is trying to approach social media differently.

Instead of just jumping in Suzuki is approaching social media by first listening and finding where their active consumers gather on social media. Currently they are reaching out to the surfing community and sponsored a movie called Ultimate Wave Tahiti 3D. The trailer is currently on the Suzuki's Facebook page and the movie will open on February 26, 2010 at the Museum of Science and Industry Omnimax Theater.

It is great to see a company think carefully before joining social media channels. I don't mind when companies decide to plug products or their brand on social media as long as it is valuable and not only about them. Hopefully other companies will follow this model of listening and evaluating and reach out to customers more effectively.

Cutting Into the First Day of the Show

http://www.chicagoautoshow.com/multimedia/blog/view_comments.asp?BLOGGER_ID=&POST_ID=135&SHOW_COMMENTS=y

'Thank you for giving, thank you for caring, and thank you for a job well done,' Jesse White, Illinois Secretary of State, said as a closing to his speech at the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony this morning. Open to interpretation, but I believe that the White was referring to not only the Chicago Automobile Trade Association (CATA) Board of Directors and staff, the vendors, the exhibitors, everyone working hard to put this fabulous show together, but also to the public for attending the event and getting out there to help boost our local economy. White encourages everyone to check out the new automotives and buy some vehicles today 'because in Illinois we are in dire need of some revenue, but I guess enough said,' Secretary White stated in a comical yet serious tone.

David Sloan, President of CATA and Co-General Manager of the Chicago Auto Show, kicked off a brief ceremony this morning recognizing former CATA President Jerry H. Cizek III's retirement after 37 years with the organization. Because of his extremely long history with the Chicago Auto Show, Cizek accepted a lifetime ticket of admission to the show represented by a one of a kind pin. With great memories of attending the show with his Grandfather, Auto Show Chairman in 1955, I am sure Jerry looks forward to taking his own grandchildren to the show with more time to enjoy the show as a very special guest. Only the sixth general manager of the Chicago Auto Show of the past 109 years, Cizek held the position of President of the CATA for 22 great years. You can tell Jerry has extreme passion for the show with his laid back sense of humor, yet prominent manner in which he presents himself.

'1-2-3,' Cizek counts off as the eight gentlemen cut the official ribbon to start the ignition of this remarkable show. Rev up your engine and attend this fantastic experience at the Chicago Auto Show 2010!

Mercedes-Benz Gets Personal

http://www.chicagoautoshow.com/multimedia/blog/view_comments.asp?BLOGGER_ID=&POST_ID=133&SHOW_COMMENTS=y

As senior public relations students working for the Chicago Auto Show, Rose Mayo and I have been on the lookout for real world experience and advice. While working here, we met several helpful and inviting individuals from Mercedes-Benz. They offered us advice and insight in regards to the auto industry.

We had the privilege of meeting the Product and Technology Public Relations Specialist, Dan Barile, of Mercedes-Benz.

We learned that one of the most important things in customer service; it's the basis for building a successful company. Every single Mercedes comes with a roadside assistance package, no matter where a person is in the U.S., if something happens to the car they'll come pick you up no matter what. Dan started with Mercedes in 2007; he talked about how networking and meeting different people is crucial to a person's future. He stresses the importance of being outgoing and friendly because you never know who you'll meet.
At Mercedes there is a three-part public relations department break down. Dan works in the product and technology department. They're main concern is how the car performs and who's noticing that performance. Other departments include a corporate department and an 'entertainment' based department. One very special and exciting event that Mercedes holds for their press is driving presentations. Mercedes brings in journalists from different countries and has them drive the new vehicle for roughly 300 miles to get a feel; it's a unique marketing tool that gets journalists buzzing about new Mercedes vehicles.

Rose and I learned that as a PR professional you won't have all of the answers. Dan said that the important thing is to be prepared and accommodating to the media and public. They are your life support and the same goes for any large automaker. When a new product comes out Mercedes will release a long lead which means the event will be happening in several months. This type of media tool is more suited for large print publications while a short lead is for local events such as a new dealership opening or closing. The fact is Mercedes-Benz is a world-class automaker with offices all around the world. They are dedicated to continually creating luxury vehicles and will remain one of Forbes '100 Best Companies to Work For.' If you have a chance, check out the Mercedes-Benz floor space at the Chicago Auto Show!

Indoor Jeep Adventure

http://www.chicagoautoshow.com/multimedia/blog/view_comments.asp?BLOGGER_ID=&POST_ID=132&SHOW_COMMENTS=y

One of the most entertaining, hands-on attractions at the Chicago Auto Show can be found at the Jeep exhibit. The Jeep test track allows you to ride in one of its vehicles with a professional driver over uneven, slanted surfaces and a steep hill. The drive demonstrates the maneuverability, traction control and other features of the Jeep line.

Heidi and I took a ride in a dark green Rubicon through the exhibit's course this morning. I have to say, I had my doubts that we wouldn't make it through without tipping over or getting stuck along the way. We were jostled around as we went over some rocky terrain, but we made it through without a scratch.

As we sat at the bottom of a 35-degree angle hill, I felt like I was waiting to go up the first huge drop of a rollercoaster. I was nervous, but excited for the big drop on the other side. Our driver started moving, but then stopped in the middle of the steep slope. I thought for sure I would fall out the back! From the side, I imagine that we looked almost vertical in the air. As we reached the top of the hill, my nerves faded, and soon we were riding downward at the same angle we went up. The surprising part was that our driver didn't even have his foot on the brake! We were just free falling. Well, almost; the car's braking system kicks in automatically at steep downgrades.

After a few more bumpy roads and uneven terrain, we were back where we started in the circuit. The Jeep exhibit test track will be open all throughout the Chicago Auto Show for the public to take a ride. Check it out in the back of the South Hall.

Surf's Up Chicago

When I think about surfing, Chicago does not usually come to mind, but Suzuki brought the idea of surfing and summer to my attention this morning as I walked around the 2010 Chicago Auto Show floor. A bright orange car with surfboards on top of it jumped out at me amp;ndash; not literally. Even the inside of the car reminded me of summer with its seats resembling beach chairs. This vibrant car is the Suzuki Makai.
Brittney, Rose, Victoria and I were able to sit in the Makai for a photo. While we sat in the Makai all thoughts of winter and snow disappeared from our thoughts which brought smiles to all of our faces. Now, all we need to do is change out of our business suits, put on shorts and travel some place warm, instead of back to Bradley this weekend. Since that is mostly likely not a possibility, at least we know Spring and Summer are only a couple of months away.

With each passing year it is costing more money to reach smaller audiences. In the attempt to grab public attention, marketers are trying to make new strategies in order to reach their target. Integrated marketing communications is new and growing field that is captivating the auto industry. With such a high demand for product placement in the automobile industry, car manufacturers such as Ford are creating agencies like Ford Global Brand Entertainment.

Recent examples include the amp;lsquo;Transformers' (1 amp;amp; 2) character Bubble bee which transforms into a Chevrolet Camaro. Also, there is the amp;lsquo;Twilight' partner, the Volvo XC60. In the movie amp;lsquo;Taken' Audi cars (the A3 and an S8) are driven by Liam Nieson as he speeds down the streets of Paris. It's almost hard to see where the film begins and the advertisement ends. It seems that slowly movie makers are incorporating more and more product placement into the films we love. Whether it's a good thing or a bad thing I'll leave it up to you to decide. But, if you want to relive your favorite movie scenes come on down to the Chicago Auto Show!

Today I attended the Kia Motors Press Conference. Before the conference even started, they had live entertainment playing a variety of young, hip cover songs - some of which included Rihanna, Miley Cirus, Black Eyed Peas, The Killers, and many more. Kia Motors provided sample servings of Goose Island 312 to put everyone in a comfortable setting. This was a great marketing tool because it went hand in hand with target consumers, young couples and parents who still want to have fun. From the media side, it was probably a plus to get positive press coverage as well. Great thinking Kia! At select times during the Auto Show they will be hosting an event called Kia Karaoke to further promote their exuberant environment, which matches the excitement you will find when driving a Kia.

While walking through the show floor with many extravagant exhibits yesterday afternoon, a gentleman approached me and asked if I was conducting interviews because he was interested in speaking and had a few comments to make regarding the show. 'Yes, I am actually blogging for the Auto Show,' I replied. The man happened to be the Chris Murphy, Senior Vice President of Sales for George P. Johnson Company. This global marketing agency works with companies who are interested in innovative and original exhibits for their top of the line products, cars. While his company starts preparing for the auto show a whole year in advance to develop new, fresh ideas, it only takes them a total of two weeks to set-up the show. Each client has a different theme which varies from show to show. New creative, strategy, technology, and delivery need to be developed per client and differentiated per show. Murphy has 12 clients at the Chicago Auto Show 2010, Toyota, GM, Chrysler, Honda, and Acura, just to list a few. Knowing that this is one of the world's greatest shows, Murphy said, 'the Chicago Auto Show should be considered a global show.'

The 2010 Chicago Auto Show will play host to WORLD vehicle introductions from Ford, Toyota, Honda, Chevrolet, Kia and Suzuki. But what's that curious tarp doing in the Bridgestone display. Bridgestone makes tires, not cars.

Those in the know will be quick to point out that Bridgestone is a huge racing backer. They are the sole tire supplier for America's premier open wheel racing series, the IZOD Indy Racing League (IRL), and the IRL is looking for a new chassis to debut in 2012. Could this be that new chassis?

Quite possibly. The vehicle under wraps in the Bridgestone display is but one proposal for a new IRL chassis. It was developed by Ben Bowlby, Designer and Chief Technology Officer at DeltaWing Racing Cars. Other builders competing for the right to supply the IRL's chassis include Dallara, Swift, and Lola.

Of those, the DeltaWing design is rumored to be the most radical. We'll find out at Bridgestone's press conference tomorrow at around 12:30 Central time. Stay tuned. . .

Hello from the 2010 Chicago Auto Show! We drove in this morning and we are already hard at work. Since our arrival we have already learned how to process credentials, blog on the official CAS website and have taken a tour of the entire floor. As a first time Auto Show attendee, it has been quite the eye-opening experience. Our room in the Hyatt is luxurious and we feel right at home in the Windy City!

The scene on the floor is an extravaganza. There are crates, tarps, ladders, cranes and cars everywhere you look. It's amazing to think that the entire show is put together in only four days! The CAS set-up crews are working diligently to make sure that everything is ready by tomorrow night. Here in the media center we've already met some high-profile media such as Charlie Wojociechowski from NBC5 News.

(Check out his report http://www.nbcchicago.com/news/local-beat/AutoShowFacebook-83830162.html )

We've also been greeted by Dave Sloan (CATA President and Co-Auto Show General Manager) and Jerry Cizek (Co-Auto Show General Manager) from the Chicago Auto Show Executive Board. The entire CAS staff has been extremely helpful and so inviting. This week looks like it will be a lot of hard work but it will be great fun and very rewarding!

It's Not Easy Driving a Lamborghini

Monday at the Chicago Auto Show is a flurry of activity, especially on the show floor. Boxes and crates fill the enormous space while forklifts and cars maneuver their way around the exhibits. It's difficult to believe that by Wednesday morning McCormick Place will be spotless and filled with glossy, new cars.

Everyone is hard at work getting each exhibit set up for media previews on Wednesday and Thursday. As I walked around the South Hall, trying to stay out of everyone's way, cars drove as slow as possible down the aisles to get to their destinations. Everyone worked around them until a bright green Lamborghini turned the heads of everyone in the vicinity. I stood in awe as it roared to a stop next to me. This is probably the closest I'll ever be to a vehicle like that! I asked the man driving how he landed that sort of job. 'It wasn't easy,' he replied. Shame it was only driving at about three miles per hour. I'm sure the driver would have loved to take it for a spin around the city.

A Concept Come True

Hybrid dream-team Fisker Automotive announced today that they'll be showing off their much-anticipated Karma plug-in hybrid electric vehicle at the 2010 Chicago Auto Show. This will be the Karma's Chicago debut, just ahead of its release to the streets later this year.

The sculpted four-door Karma is a 403 horsepower green dream, capable of 125 mph and 0-60 in 6 seconds, all the while maintaining an impressive 100 mpg. Even better the first 50 miles of the PHEV's 300-mile range are electric only and produce no emissions.

The Karma features 22-inch wheels, a 10.2 inch touch-screen control center, and space for two sets of golf clubs in the trunk, proving that the frisky hybrid is no poser. As versatile in the garage as on the road, the vehicle's lithium-ion battery can be topped off from a standard 110v power outlet or charged in just 6 hours from a 220v outlet.

Two Chicagoland retail groups will carry the Fisker brand when the Karma hits showrooms later this year: the Fields Auto Group, and the Patrick Dealer Group. A new Karma will set you back at least $87,900, though there's a $7,500 federal tax credit plus up to $4,000 from the state--making the possible base price a much-more-palatable $76,400.

The striking and distinctive Fisker Karma is proof that sometimes concepts do come true. It's a must-see during your visit to the 2010 Chicago Auto Show.

2011 Mustang GT to give the giddyup at Daytona

http://www.chicagoautoshow.com/multimedia/blog/view_comments.asp?BLOGGER_ID=&POST_ID=119&SHOW_COMMENTS=y

Ford announced that the 2011 Mustang GT has been selected as the pace car for this year's Daytona 500. Not only will this be the first time Ford's pony car has paced Daytona, but the first time for any Ford since the Torino GT convertible in 1970.

The Daytona Pace Car edition adds a Ford Racing suspension, strut tower brace and mufflers, and a unique paint scheme with painted wheels, special interior treatment and specially branded lit sill plates to the already fearsome 5.0-liter, 412 horsepower V8 Race Red glass roof coupe. Like a stock Mustang GT, it will also have specially tuned Electric Power Assist Steering (EPAS), 11.5-inch front and 11.8-inch rear vented disc brakes, and a pretty decent 25 mpg highway.

To commemorate the occasion, Ford will build 50 2011 Mustang GT Daytona 500 Pace Cars, to be sold to the public. If you want the actual car that touched tires to the Daytona International Speedway, it will be at auction on January 23 at the annual Barrett-Jackson Car Auction in Scottsdale, Arizona. All proceeds over MSRP will be donated to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. We probably won't see the pace car in Chicago (it'll be busy on the speedway,) but we promise that all you pony car fans will have plenty to love at the Chicago Auto Show.

All-electric Volvo headed to Chicago

http://www.chicagoautoshow.com/multimedia/blog/view_comments.asp?BLOGGER_ID=&POST_ID=118&SHOW_COMMENTS=y

Volvo announced that it would be bringing their prototype all-electric C30 Battery Electric Vehicle to the Chicago Auto Show this February. Volvo intends to put a plug-in hybrid on the market by 2012, and this prototype hints that there's a lot to look forward to on that front.

This all-electric version of the lightweight C30 stores power in a lithium-ion battery that plugs into a run-of-the-mill electrical outlet, with a full eight-hour charge providing a 93 mile range. The C30 BEV accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in under 11 seconds and tops out at 80 mph, well suited for commuters and city drivers (not that Chicago highway driving gets much faster.) Because the electric motor lives up front and the rest of the car is straight production C30, Volvo says that the electric handles exactly like the original.

Volvo still emphasizes the safety of the C30 BEV, as well. The vehicle is packed with the manufacturer's usual laundry list of safety features, but one of their most unusual priorities has been finding the best place to house the battery. Using a combination of virtual and real-life crash tests, Volvo is making sure their battery tech won't add insult to injury by zapping you after a collision. They've found that the safest place to put the battery is in the drive shaft tunnel, though putting it where the fuel tank would be is good too.
Because Volvo has stated that they're focusing more on plug-in hybrids, this will be a prime opportunity to get a feel for the electric portion of the hybrid they'll undoubtedly come up with next. This is one car you'll definitely want to check out in Chicago.

We understand, December is a very taxing month. Between digging yourself out of a snowy driveway every morning and spending half an hour trying to park at the mall, you might start to lose it. Just count your lucky stars that you're not as far gone as these two drivers.

Unable to experience the joy of scrambling around hanging lights on an ice-slick roof, Texan Rachelle Brown decided to have her festive near-death experience in her Corolla. Decked out with a nativity scene, cotton snowballs and a few strands of lights plugged into an inverter, the snow globe car is as distracting as it is a fire hazard. Nicely done, Rachelle.

Kris Marshall's Christmas truck, on the other hand, is a 25-year-old tradition. The central Iowa truck salesman hauls around a generator to power the 3000 lights taped all over the vehicle. While most police officers are pretty understanding, the whole business is not at all street legal and Kris has been ticketed a few times. In any case, nobody will be able to say they didn't see him coming.

Tailgate Approved!

http://www.chicagoautoshow.com/multimedia/blog/view_comments.asp?BLOGGER_ID=&POST_ID=116&SHOW_COMMENTS=y

So you're on the way to the big game and plan on doing some serious tailgating. Until now, your choices for getting amped up included listening to the pre-game show on the radio or pulling out a TV and generator and adding a big honking antenna on the top of the van. No longer, Chrysler Corporation has just launched Mobile TV.

Available on Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge vehicles as a $629 MOPAR dealer-installed option, Mobile TV utilizes the in-vehicle entertainment system to stream up to 20 different channels, including live sports, breaking news, kids programs and primetime TV.

The channel lineup includes CBS Mobile, CNBC, Comedy Central, FOX News, MSNBC, MTV, NBC 2Go, and Nickelodeon. Mobile TV is being offered on 2008-2010 model year vehicles with factory DVD entertainment systems, including the Chrysler Town amp;amp; Country, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Jeep Commander, Dodge Grand Caravan, Dodge Journey, Dodge Nitro, Ram 1500 and Ram 2500/3500. The service also can be added to select 2008-2010 model-year vehicles when new Mopar headrest or seat-top DVD entertainment systems are purchased.

A small antenna, similar in size to a laptop mouse, is mounted on a vehicle's roof to deliver the digital TV signal. Inside the vehicle, the receiver and wiring are installed under the interior trim of the vehicle and are not visible to occupants. The $695 purchase price includes a one-year subscription and a 3-year/36,000-mile warranty for new vehicles and 12-month/12,000-mile warranty on used vehicles.

You'll be able to see Mobile TV for yourself at the Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep display at the 2010 Chicago Auto Show. I wonder if Chrysler will demo Mobile TV in the line for the Jeep Driving Experience?

Viper goes fast, rubs it in.

http://www.chicagoautoshow.com/multimedia/blog/view_comments.asp?BLOGGER_ID=&POST_ID=115&SHOW_COMMENTS=y

Dodge is throwing this generation of the Viper one heck of a going-away party. Not content with the street-legal 2010 Viper SRT10 ACR's production lap records at Laguna Seca and Nurburgring, the special edition ACR-X goes track-only to rub it in.

Though it runs with the same 8.4-liter V10 as the ACR, the ACR-X ups the horsepower from 600 to 640 by adding a new set of headers and a low-restriction exhaust system. Combine that with an upgraded track-tuned suspension, factory roll-cage, fuel cell, race seat, and 160-pound diet, and you've got some serious competition cred. The Dodge Viper SRT10 ACR-X is priced at $110,000 (about $30,000 under the Viper Competition Coupe) and should be available by spring 2010.

Two other special editions have been announced as well. The Vooodoo Edition is a stock ACR painted black, striped silver down the driver's side, and limited to a ten unit production run. The 1:33 edition (of which only 33 will be manufactured) commemorates the car's record-breaking Laguna performance, featuring red and black detailing on the seats, console trim, and instrument cluster. Even more special editions are on the way, so expect a serious Viper showing by February's Chicago Auto Show.

Ice Can't Touch This

http://www.chicagoautoshow.com/multimedia/blog/view_comments.asp?BLOGGER_ID=&POST_ID=114&SHOW_COMMENTS=y

We had the first snow of the season here in Chicago, which means everything on the road will soon be lightly crusted in salt. While salt is great at keeping the roads clear, the corrosive runoff tends to do a number on the steel in bridges, road supports, and your car. There are alternatives to using salt, like piping hot water under the pavement or introducing additives such as steel shavings that produce heat in the presence of a little electricity. However, those methods work too slowly or are far too costly to implement.

Fortunately, there's still hope for those who wish their driveways would just shovel themselves. Christiana Chang and her colleagues at the University of Houston used paper embedded with cone-shaped nanofibers to heat a 10cm thick chunk of garden-variety road concrete from -10 to 0 degrees Celsius in two hours. That's just enough to prevent snow and ice from accumulating in the first place.

The nanofiber paper Chang and colleagues are using is already widely and cheaply used to make electronics, but it will still take a considerable amount of work to scale up to a full-size roadway. Still, the potential savings on salting, plowing, and maintenance could make self-heating roads cost-effective.

2011 Audi A8 Debuts

http://www.chicagoautoshow.com/multimedia/blog/view_comments.asp?BLOGGER_ID=&POST_ID=113&SHOW_COMMENTS=y

Audi took the wraps off of the 2011 A8 yesterday. From the looks of it, Audi designed the fourth incarnation of its flagship sedan to blur the line between sport and luxury.

Performance enthusiasts will appreciate the 372-hp V8, adaptive air suspension, 8-speed tiptronic automatic transmission, stability control, and AWD with optional sport differential. Luxury fans will appreciate the heated, cooled, massaging seats, serious noise and vibration dampening, copious interior accent lighting, and a 1400-watt, 19-speaker Bang amp;amp; Olufsen audio system.

Audi didn't skimp on the safety features, either. The 2011 A8 comes with any of four safety packages that utilize feedback from the ESP system. If the driver slams on the brakes or starts skidding, the A8 tightens the seat belts, closes the windows and sunroof, and triggers the hazard lights. Other safety packages alert the driver, tap the brakes as a warning, or adjust the seats and brake automatically when it's too late to avoid a collision--shedding up to 25 mph in the half-second before impact.

The kicker is the built-in gadgetry. Audi packed in full LED headlights (an industry first), touch screen navigation, handwriting recognition, and quite a few driver assistance systems such as radar-aided proximity control, built-in speed limit display and amp;quot;lane assistamp;quot; that resists changing lanes into another vehicle or without signaling.

For the full Audi press release (it's pretty darn long) head to the source at the bottom, or you can wait and see it yourself in February at the Chicago Auto Show.

No, not the holiday season, the auto-show season.

With the opening of the Los Angeles show this weekend, we are officially on the march toward Chicago. LA is the first major North American auto show to focus on the 2010 models and is home to nearly a dozen world and North American introductions.

After LA comes Detroit. Traditionally known as the industry show, it falls in early January and grabs the lion's share of new-vehicle introductions. Though Detroit's been down on its luck recently, things are looking up in the Motor City with Ford leading the charge and Chrysler and General Motors ready with a flurry of new-model intros.

Hot on the heals of Detroit is the granddaddy of them all, Chicago. The nation's largest show and the nation's longest-running show, Chicago is well regarded as the amp;quot;consumer show.amp;quot; Mixing the intros from LA and Detroit with more than a few of its own and stirring in the complete 2010 lineups, Chicago makes the perfect post-holiday cocktail for new-car shoppers.

Over the next two months, we'll make some exciting announcements about the Windy City's auto show and you can be sure they will be posted in this blog. So why not come back every now and then, we promise you won't be disappointed.

2011 Cadillac CTS Coupe

http://www.chicagoautoshow.com/multimedia/blog/view_comments.asp?BLOGGER_ID=&POST_ID=111&SHOW_COMMENTS=y

Providing an early Christmas present for autophiles, Cadillac has unwrapped the 2011 CTS Coupe. It's more or less unchanged since we last saw it at the 2009 Chicago Auto Show. That's a great thing, considering the sleek style and capable performance of this newest addition to the CTS line. Powered by a 304-horsepower 3.6-liter V-6 with direct injection, the CTS Coupe will be offered with either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic (with driver shift control and steering-wheel-mounted shift buttons).

Although it has the same wheelbase as the existing CTS, the Coupe is about two inches lower and two inches shorter. The windshield is set at a fast 62 degrees, and the backglass is unfathomably near to being horizontal. Cadillac also skipped the door handles on the CTS Coupe, opting for touch-pad entry in an effort to preserve the design's minimalistic feel. Like it's sedan sibling, the Coupe is packed with technology, including mp3 player and iPod compatibility, built in audio hard drive, Bluetooth connectivity, Bose 5.1 surround audio system, and pop-up navigation screen.

Cadillac expects to have the CTS Coupe (and a high-performance V-series version) in showrooms by spring 2010.

Acura ZDX Priced

http://www.chicagoautoshow.com/multimedia/blog/view_comments.asp?BLOGGER_ID=&POST_ID=110&SHOW_COMMENTS=y

Acura has released pricing and options for their all-new (and very slick) four-door sports coupe, the ZDX. The ZDX made a splash when it debuted during last year's auto show season, and we're looking forward to taking a closer look at the production version at the 2010 Chicago Auto Show.

All ZDX models have a 3.7-liter VTEC V-6 with 300 horsepower and 270 lb-ft of torque, Acura's amp;quot;Super Handling All-Wheel Drive,amp;quot; and the world's longest panoramic glass roof. The Technology Package adds a navigation system with a full VGA display and voice recognition, real-time weather, radar maps and traffic with rerouting, a multi-view rear camera, an upgrade to a 415-watt audio system with a built in hard drive, climate control, and keyless entry with push button ignition. The Advance Package does one better, tacking on a new blind spot information system, adaptive cruise control, a collision mitigating braking system, IDS active damper system, heated and ventilated front seats, and some upgraded detailing.

MSRP on the ZDX is $45,495 ($49,995 with the Technology Package, $56,045 with the Advance Package) and it gets an EPA estimated 16/23 miles to the gallon. Look for it at Acura dealerships on December 15, or check it out at the Chicago Auto Show starting February 12.

Automakers "mbrace" Smartphones

http://www.chicagoautoshow.com/multimedia/blog/view_comments.asp?BLOGGER_ID=&POST_ID=109&SHOW_COMMENTS=y

Mercedes-Benz and Hughes Telematics recently announced amp;quot;mbrace,amp;quot; featuring applications for iPhone and Blackberry to connect drivers even more closely with their vehicles. The new service, which is replacing the German automaker's Tele Aid system, is accessible using smartphones, the Internet, or from inside the vehicle. Basic features include remote lock and unlock, collision and alarm notification, stolen vehicle location, emergency calling and roadside assistance, and vehicle finder. Mercedes-Benz is also offering a package with location-based weather and traffic, agent-assisted navigation, and amp;quot;Mercedes-Benz Conciergeamp;quot; for top tier subscribers.

This isn't the first time we've seen smartphones take on remote security and entry. Aftermarket car alarm and remote entry manufacturer Viper debuted an iPhone application with remote start and lock/unlock in October, and before that, car-sharing service Zipcar's app let users lock, unlock, and honk the horn remotely.
