Despite catching criticism for just about everything it does, our Federal Government has moments of intense clarity. One example, the fine folks at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration have finally gotten proactive.
After years of hosting one of the most Byzantine and user-unfriendly Web sites, the fine folks at NHTSA have finally cleaned things up and come to the realization that people want two things from its site: crash test results and recall information. Sure the NHTSA.gov homepage is a still a smattering of everything transportation related and the cryptic navigation would make an NASA flight commander wince. Yet, somehow, NHTSA has floundered upon two great ideas.
- It has introduced a Web site called safercar.gov that is designed to make it easy for consumers to get the safety information they are looking for.
- It now allows consumers to sign up for recall notifications of vehicle recalls and defects.
Now I am certainly not an expert in governmental workings, but I can just imagine the amount of red tape that must have been cut through at NHTSA to make these two fundamentally stunning events happen.
The safercar.gov Web site should be in every car-owners favorites and it takes about two minutes to signup for the Recall notifications via Email. Do yourself a favor and put your government to work for you, log on to http://safercar.gov and bookmark it today.
