Hometown Hero - Made In Illinois

Posted by: Kristin Kreher

Visitors from Central Illinois got a dose of home when viewing the lineup from Mitsubishi Motors at this year’s Chicago Auto Show.

The manufacturer’s 2015 Outlander Sport was on display, bringing with it a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine. The upgraded-for-2015 engine produces 168-horsepower, a 20-hp increase over current 2.0-liter engines. However, Mitsubishi’s response to customers’ desire for more power was not what’s special about the Outlander Sport as it sits on the floor of the Chicago Auto Show.

This model is manufactured in Normal, Illinois, just 130 miles south of McCormick Place, home of the Chicago Auto Show. Exported straight from the factory, the Outlander Sport is Mitsubishi’s best-selling vehicle.
“The Outlander has now entered the global market,” Mitsubishi Product Specialist Melody said. “If anyone anywhere in the world orders one, it is shipped out from right here in Illinois.”

Bloomington-Normal native Charlie Volz is familiar with the Mitsubishi plant in his hometown but said he had not known exactly what models were produced there.

“I know many people who currently work with or used to work for Mitsubishi, whether it was in the factory, in management or in something else entirely,” Volz said. “It’s neat to see something from home here on display.”
According to Melody, Volz is not alone.

“Many people in Illinois don’t realize the Outlander is made right here,” she said. “We are always asking people where they think it’s made, and very few get it right.”
